It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-8360 ext. 1.

Allergies

We are committed to providing a safe environment that is inclusive for all children. A number of our students have a potentially life-threatening allergy to peanut and tree nuts. Please avoid sending food/snacks with nuts of any kind.

Nut Sensitive Policy

We have children at our school who are allergic to nuts and related nut products. The specifics and the severity are different for each individual. At Killarney School we discourage the consumption of these nut products at recess and during the lunch hour. Parents must indicate any special health concerns on the school registration for their child and are encouraged to ensure classroom teachers are also aware of health issues.

Please note that should your child come to school with a product that includes nuts, we will offer them a comfortable place to eat that food.  A friendly reminder notice will be sent home with the child to remind families to avoid packing these types of products.

Medication

During the regular school day, any child who is required to take medication prescribed by a doctor or with parental consent may be assisted by the Principal or designate. It is mandatory that the parent completes the appropriate form before medication may be administered.

Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form

• This form is to be used when there is a student health issue regarding attention. This includes when there is a request to administer medication. 

Student Health Plan

This form is to be:

• completed if a physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school
• completed if medication is to be taken at school,
• reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration.

Medical Alert

If your child has special medical requirements please ensure that this information is provided to the school staff at the beginning of the year and updated as necessary.

Sick Children

Please do not send your child to school if there are definite signs of ill health. We have neither the facilities nor the personnel to care for sick children. Children who are ill should receive proper medical attention and should not attend school until their health has improved.

If children become ill during the day we will phone parents or emergency contacts. Please ensure that your contact information is up to date.

Ambulance Charges

In the event that staff deems a student’s medical condition to require emergency care, an ambulance will be called. With the exception of pre-existing medical conditions and self-inflicted injuries, ambulance charges (less the City of Calgary distance fee) are claimable through Seaboard Life. Parents should keep the original copy of any ambulance bill to claim reimbursement.

School Nurse

A nurse from Calgary Health Services provides services to the students at Killarney School on an as needed basis. If you have concerns, please write a note and it will be placed in her mail slot at the school and the nurse will contact you on the next visit. Parental permission is required for individual student assessment.
